Hundreds of pairs of old athletic shoes, donated to the ongoing WSU Tri-Cities “Reuse-A-Shoe” recycling program, will be on display April 25 on the north Richland campus.
The display is being set up as part of a ceremony announcing both the winning school in the 2006 shoe donation competition and the establishment of the Lelon Mclouth Scholarship at the university. The event will be held at 11 a.m. in the Atrium of the campus’ West Building.
The Reuse-A-Shoe program, sponsored by Nike Corporation, turns old, worn-out athletic shoes into new surfaces for running tracks, soccer fields and basketball courts.
“Reuse-A-Shoe is a perfect example of how recycling can work in our communities,” said Doria Monter-Rogers, who administers the program on WSU’s Tri-Cities campus. “We take things that no one needs and have outlived their usefulness and turn them into new products for people to use.”
At the same time, the university will announce it is establishing the Lelon Mclouth Scholarship, a fund which will support WSU Tri-Cities students.
Mclouth, now retired, is a long-time recycling activist in the Tri-Cities and served as a crossing guard for students at Richland’s Jefferson Elementary School. Jefferson principal Dan Easton will join university officials for the ceremonies.
Also on display will be examples of WSU Tri-Cities’ many other recycling activities.
