Convocation to become tradition

Faculty, staff, incoming freshmen and transfer students will have the opportunity to take part in a WSU tradition this fall.

University convocation, an occasion meant to welcome new individuals to the WSU community and mark the beginning of the WSU experience, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at Beasley Coliseum.

“Convocation is designed to be the first welcome all new students, faculty and staff receive here at the university,” said Luke Jones, assistant director of New Student Programs.

Similar events have been held in previous years, but under different names and with different formats and focuses, Jones said.

“Convocation has taken on different forms through the years,” Jones said. “This year is really the beginning of a new tradition.”

Convocation 2006 will place an emphasis on the quality of education received at WSU and what it means to be a scholar.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to get involved with convocation. There will be a faculty processional that will meet at Flag Lane at 9:30 a.m. and proceed to Beasley Coliseum. Faculty also are encouraged to wear regalia to the event. More information on the processional and regalia rental can be found at www.wsu.edu/convocation.

Convocation speakers will include WSU President V. Lane Rawlins; WSU Executive Vice President and Provost Robert Bates; Kenneth Alhadeff, chairman of the Board of Regents; Thomas Dickinson, a Regents professor of physics; and the Interim Dean of Students Lucy Lorea.
