PULLMAN – Two WSU students will each receive a $20,000 National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarship to study in China. A third WSU student was selected as an alternate.
The recipients include Jared Downing and Luke Mohr. Alison Leach is the alternate student.
The national scholarships are intended to provide support to U.S. undergraduates who pursue the study of languages and cultures currently underrepresented in study abroad and that are critical to U.S. national security.
The NSEP stipulates that an award recipient should work in the federal government in a position with national security responsibilities for an amount of time equal to the duration of assistance provided.
Downing graduated in 2004 from A.J. Dimond High School in Anchorage, Ala., and expects to graduate from WSU with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science in May 2009.
Mohr is a political science, psychology and Chinese language and culture major. The WSU senior, who graduated in 2004 from Newport High School, Newport, Wash., has served as WSU International Center peer mentor and has been on the President’s Honor Roll since fall 2005. After graduation, he hopes for a career in international relations between the U.S. and China.
Leach, a microbiology and Chinese language and culture major, was selected as an alternate student. She graduated in 2005 from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane, Wash., and has received numerous scholarships while at WSU, including the Program Study Abroad in Asia Scholarship for the 2008-09 academic year.
