Big Numbers for WSU Marching Band

Band Continues to Grow — Washington State University’s Cougar Marching Band will welcome 245 musicians to this year’s band, the largest ensemble in its history. Some Pac-10 marching bands have staffs of 20 or more, but WSU has experienced this rapid growth with the assistance of just four staff members – director Don Hower, two graduate assistants and a stadium announcer. When Hower took over in 1991, the band had only 70 members, growing to 136 members in 2001 to 180 members in 2002. This year’s WSU Cougar Marching Band will be the centerpiece of the Sept. 10 spirit event during WSU Week in Seattle. Hower is available to talk about the marching band and what has led to its steady revival. He can be reached at 509.335.4545 or at howerde@wsu.edu
