PULLMAN, Wash. — A design created by Pullman student Dayoun Yoo, an 8th-grader at Lincoln Middle School, was selected for inclusion in the 2005 National Youth Sports Program calendar. The WSU-NYSP camp is one of 200 program sites nationwide that provides free recreational and educational activities for approximately 75,000 youngsters nationwide.
Yoo said that she attended the NYSP camp every day last summer because it was a good way to make friends during the summer and because she enjoyed the art classes and recreational opportunities. She plans to attend the NYSP camp again this summer.
The daily enrichment activities of the NYSP at WSU are open to all Palouse area youth ages 10 through 16, said Cedric Price, NYSP activity director.
The free program will begin June 20 and continue through July 26. NYSP is targeted to low-income families, however no applicants will be rejected, Price said. The program is open to youth who live within a 60-mile radius of WSU. That area reaches from Rosalia to Deary,
Through the Summer Food Service Program, lunch and snacks will be provided to all eligible children free of charge. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, gender or disability.
The participants will take part in a variety of educational programs, as well as sport and recreation activities and college preparation experiences, Price said. Some 350 youngsters are expected to participate, including for the first time, about 50 youth from the
Approximately 20 WSU students work for the program as camp counselors and program assistants. Those students gain valuable experience in directing camp activities and recreation programs.
