PULLMAN, Wash. — The Compton Union Building Gallery at Washington State University will host “Looking In – Looking Out,” an exhibition of sculptural mixed-media works by Michael Horswill from Oct. 27-Nov. 15.
The gallery is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Admission is free.
Horswill’s work bridges the spectrum of knowing to unknown, as he examines what we see and how we see it — looking inside, looking outside. His work challenges the viewer to re-evaluate ideas of beauty. Is it decay or new growth, organic or mechanical, natural or fabricated? These sculptures, many lite from within, are fascinating constructions of mysterious materials presented with humor and humility.
According to the artist, “…an optimist looks at a glass of water and says it’s half full – a pessimist looks at the same glass and says it’s half empty… I, however, say, ‘What’s that little green thing floating on the surface wearing a fuzzy orange robe and … eating Fruitloops out of a sock?’ ”
Horswill earned a master’s degree in fine arts from the University of Idaho and a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary arts from the University of Washington. He lives and works in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where he is a member of the art faculty at North Idaho College and represented by the Art Spirit Gallery.
