WSU to Host Oct 18 Educational Choral Festival

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University’s School of Music and Theatre Arts will host 16 middle and high school choirs from Washington and Idaho in an Oct. 18 Educational Choral Festival.

Each choir will perform throughout the day in 20-minute intervals before an audience of their peers and college faculty clinicians. Performances will also include the WSU Madrigal Singers and Concert Choir under the direction of Lori Wiest, a WSU faculty member and festival coordinator.

Following the performances, each choir will participate in a 40-minute clinic with a clinician to work on setting goals for the remainder of the school year. This year’s clinicians include Lynn Brinckmeyer from Eastern Washington University and Scott Peterson of Yakima Valley Community College and Central Washington University. Wiest and WSU faculty members John Weiss and Julie Wieck will also participate.

Jennifer Scovell, a WSU faculty member, will direct WSU’s VoJazz in a 1 p.m. performance in Kimbrough Auditorium that will include a vocal jazz ensemble from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Following at 2:30 p.m., Sheila Converse, a WSU faculty member, will present a workshop, “The Dos and Don’ts of Auditioning,” in the auditorium.

Choirs participating in this year’s event include the Coeur d’Alene (Idaho) High School Chamber Singers, Auburn High School Chamber Choir, Post Falls (Idaho) High School Troubadors, East Valley High School Treble Select Choir (Spokane), Clarkston High School Concert Choir, Salk Middle School 8th Grade Choir (Spokane), Kettle Falls High School Concert Choir, Mabton High School Choir, Othello High School Chamber Choir, Lewiston High School Concert Choir, Pullman High School Treble Triad, Zillah High School Madrigal Singers and Moses Lake High School Concert Choir and Chamber Choir.

A 5 p.m. Choral Concert will follow in Bryan Hall Theatre and is open to the public.
