Campus Involvement Presents Events the Week of June 14

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University’s Office of Campus Involvement will present three public events the week of June 14.

On Monday, June 14, Backpacking 101 will be presented from noon to 1 p.m. in the Compton Union Building, Room 220, as part of the Outdoors on the Palouse Series. Mike Petelovany of the WSU Outdoor Recreation Center will discuss the fundamentals of how to backpack, the type of pack to use for the different types of hikes and the clothing, food and camping equipment to use. Participants can bring a lunch and learn how to enjoy the Palouse via hiking.

Musician John Floridis will bring his distinct electro-acoustic guitar style to Glenn Terrell Mall from noon to 1 p.m. June 16. Floridis sings his own diverse and soulful songs and brings a sense of humor and vitality to the stage. He was voted best musician by Missoula Independent readers and has opened for Shawn Colvin, Emmylou Harris and Patty Larkin. He has recorded three CDs. Food will be offered by University Catering. In case of rain, the event will move to the CUB Lair.

The sports drama “Against the Ropes” will be shown at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday, June 17 in the CUB auditorium. Admission is free. Meg Ryan and Omar Epps star in this film inspired by true events in the life of renowned boxing manager Jackie Kallen. The middle-aged Jewish mother from Michigan guided the careers of a number of high-profile professional boxers, including world champions James “Lights Out” Toney, Bronco McKart and Thomas Hearns. The drama focuses on her relationship with one boxer, in particular, Luther Shaw, a light-heavyweight contender from the inner city. The movie is rated PG-13.
