Summer Camp Ready for Area Youth

PULLMAN, Wash.–Approximately 200 area youth are participating daily in the National Youth Sports Program at Washington State University, and there is still space available for new participants, said Johnny Jones, NYSP community liaison officer.

The program began June 10 and will continue until July 19, Jones said. The program, which is targeted to low-income families, is open to youth ages 10 through 16 who live within a 60-mile radius of WSU. That area reaches from Rosalia to Deary, Idaho. There is no cost for the program activities, lunch, or bus transportation to and from the WSU campus.

The participants enjoy a variety of educational activities, especially in math and science. They also participate in sport and recreation activities and college preparation programs.

A total of 20 WSU students work for the program as camp counselors and program assistants, Jones said. Those students gain valuable experience in directing camp activities and recreation programs.

Jones invites all youth interested in participating to contact NYSP at 509/335-1309 or by e-mail to jdjones@wsu.edu.
