Locke Appoints WSU President Emeritus Smith to HEC Board

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University officials have learned that Samuel H. Smith, WSU president emeritus, has been appointed to the state Higher Education Coordinating Board by Gov. Gary Locke, effective July 25 through June 30, 2007.

Smith’s nomination has been sent to the Washington State Senate for confirmation.

The 10-member citizen board (http://www.hecb.wa.gov/) governs a state agency by the same name, which represents the “broad public interest” in higher education and is dedicated to expanding higher education opportunity in Washington.

Smith served 15 years (1985-2000) as president of WSU, the eighth leader of the institution since it was founded in 1890. He now lives in Seattle.
