The following are statements from Washington State University regarding the 2004 university rankings by U.S. News & World Report. WSU is one of only two universities in the Pacific Northwest to be ranked among the nation’s 50 leading public research universities.
“I appreciate this national recognition of the work of our faculty and staff,” said V. Lane Rawlins, Washington State University president. “Our outstanding faculty, research programs and emphasis on undergraduate education have made WSU a first choice for more and more outstanding students. We intend to continue this momentum in the years ahead.”
In the magazine’s “Programs to look for” section, WSU also was cited as one of 13 research institutions that do a particularly good job of making writing a priority at all levels of instruction and in all curricular areas.
“For the last 15 years, we have been steadily building this program,” said Lisa Johnson, director of the WSU Writing Center. “It has been gratifying to see that faculty members across the university have all taken it as their charge to help students become better writers and critical thinkers. They are not just leaving it to the English Department.”
