Pullman, Wash. — The Washington State University Madrigal Singers leave Thursday for a 10-day performance tour in northern Italy, where they will visit several cities, completing the tour by performing March 22 at the Vatican.
The group will visit Milan, Verona, Venice, Bologna, Florence, Siena and Rome, appearing at locations where the music they will perform was written, said conductor and WSU faculty member Lori Wiest.
“While in Italy, we feel it is important to share music embedded in each country’s culture,” Wiest said. “The madrigal style of music thrived during the Italian Renaissance, and the spiritual had a profound impact on many forms of American music.”
The Madrigal Singers is a select group of 24 students who perform music from the Medieval and Renaissance eras, especially the Italian Renaissance, as well as several pieces of contemporary American classical music.
Portions of the estimated $45,000 tour cost were raised by members through fund-raising activities, Wiest said.
