PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University Theatre will present its production of the off-Broadway play “Getting Out” in October on the WSU campus.
The play, written by Marsha Norman, will be performed at Daggy Hall’s Wadleigh Theatre Oct. 8-10 and Oct. 15-17 at 8 p.m.
Norman’s production tells the story of a woman attempting to rebuild her life following her release from jail. “The production is not about child abuse or about a woman trying to get her baby back, or about finding God and becoming a law abiding citizen,” said director and WSU faculty member Terry Converse. “‘Getting Out’ is about all of those things, yet it is not simply a play about problems.”
Ultimately the tale is about a woman who discovers a sense of self after everything she had or could have had has been taken away from her.
A theatrically fascinating aspect of this play is the fact that two actresses play different facets of the same central character, said Converse. “Arlene is the struggling woman of today, whereas Arlie is the bad girl of the past.”
On Oct. 10 and Oct. 16, a panel of WSU and community members will discuss the emotional and psychological issues addressed in the play.
