WSU President Sam Smith Speaking at Alumni Event

PULLMAN, Wash.–Washington State University President Samuel Smith will be the keynote speaker during the 11th annual Southern California WSU Alumni and Cougar Friends luncheon Feb. 20 in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
The event, open to the public at the Desert Island Country Club, begins at 11 a.m. with a social hour followed by lunch and program at noon.
Smith, president of WSU since 1985, will speak about current issues related to the university and the WSU Cougars’ experience in the 1998 Rose Bowl.
The program will also include comments by Dennis Jones, Fort Worth, Texas, SU Alumni Association president, and a “Cougar Spirit” slide show presentation by Bob Smawley, Alumni Association representative.
Smith is chair of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Executive Committee, the NCAA’s primary governing body. Recognized nationally as a leader in distance education, he is a member and past-chair of the Commission on Information Technologies of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. In addition, he is a member of the NASULGC Kellogg Commission on the Future of the State and Land-Grant Universities.
