PULLMAN, Wash. — Terry McElwain, a member of the veterinary faculty since 1989, has been appointed interim dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University.
Provost Gretchen M. Bataille announced the one-year appointment which begins June 1. McElwain succeeds Borje Gustafsson, who retires after nine years as veterinary dean.
McElwain graduated from Kansas State University in 1978 with a degree in agriculture and was valedictorian of his KSU graduating class of veterinarians in 1980. After a year of clinical practice in Pennsylvania, he was accepted to WSU’s doctoral program in veterinary microbiology and pathology. He received a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institutes of Health and completed his Ph.D. in 1986. He was a member of the University of Florida faculty for two years before returning to WSU in 1989.
Named director of WSU’s Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory and the Animal Health Research Center in 1993, McElwain was appointed full professor in 1996.
He has served on the Dean’s Cabinet in veterinary medicine since 1993 and presently is a member of the search committee to select a permanent dean of the college.
