PULLMAN, Wash. — “We Love To Dance,” a recital of Washington State University students dancing in a variety of styles including modern, jazz, ballet and hip-hop, is set for 8 p.m. Dec. 4 in the university’s R. R. Jones Theatre in Daggy Hall.
Some 70 students taking dance classes under the direction of faculty member Phyllis Gooden-Young will perform in a variety of groupings. The only professional dance instructor at the university, her classes are offered within the School of Music and Theatre Arts, part of WSU’s College of Liberal Arts.
Tickets for the student-choreographed recital are $4 each and will be sold starting at 7 p.m. the day of the performances in the Daggy Hall Box Office.
Gooden-Young said the recitals are often sold out. “We only do one performance a semester, and it’s a rare opportunity for people around here to see a dance performance,” she explained.
The student performers will have extra springs in their steps, thanks to installation this summer of a $29,000 solid, sprung wood Daggy dance studio, Room 1A, practice floor designed especially for dancing.
Funding for the floor came from a grant, fund raisers and private donations, including a gift from WSU Regent Ken Alhadeff. Dance barres and floor-to-ceiling mirrors are still needed to complete the studio.
