WSU Percussion Invitational March 12

PULLMAN, Wash. — Two high school percussion ensembles will perform with the Washington State University percussion ensemble at a Percussion Invitational at 8 p.m., March 12, in Kimbrough Concert Hall.

This is the first year that WSU has invited high school ensembles, said WSU ensemble director David Jarvis. The performance will allow young musicians to perform in a formal concert setting and hear other percussionists, he said. This year, WSU invited North Central High School Percussion Ensemble of Spokane and Newport High School Percussion of Bellevue.

The North Central ensemble will perform “Afro-Amero” by Phil Faini, “Percussion Concussion” by Dallas Burke and “Island Dance” by Bob Dubinski. Following the performance, the Newport High ensemble will perform “Windstone Suite” by Jared Spears; Poncho Sanchez’s “Bien Sabroso” arranged by Pablo Mayor; and John Philip Sousa’s “The Thunderer,” arranged by Earl Hatch.

The WSU ensemble will close the concert with “Ritmica No. 5” by Amadeo Roldan and “Three Brothers” by Michael Colgrass. The ensemble also will perform the premier of WSU student Tony Sodano’s, “First Movement from the Drumline Suite.” The final piece performed will be David Gillingham’s “Stained Glass.”

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Jarvis at (509) 335-3929.
