VANCOUVER, Wash. — Chinese American author Judy Yung will speak on the social history of Chinese American women in honor of Women’s History Month at Washington State University Vancouver.
Her talk, “A Bowl Full of Tears: The Immigration Experience of Chinese Women,” takes place March 6 from noon to 1:15 p.m. in the WSU Vancouver lecture hall.
An author and assistant professor of American Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, Yung will discuss how and why social change occurred for Chinese American women in the first half of the 20th century. Her books, “Unbound Feet: A Social History of Chinese Women in San Francisco” and “Unbound Voices: A Social History of Chinese Women in San Francisco” serve as the basis for her talk. The theme of foot binding is used “as a symbol of subjugation and subordination that Chinese women break out of,” Yung said.
