Refugee Photos on Display at WSU; Reception Set for March 11 at Museum

PULLMAN, Wash. — Photographs and stories of Afghan refugees gathered by an American-born photographer traveling in Pakistan will be the subject of a reception at 7 p.m., March 11, in the Fine Arts Center on the Washington State University campus.

The photos and stories, “When Two Bulls Fight, the Leg of the Calf is Broken,” will be on display at the WSU Museum of Art March 4 – April 6. The display is taken from the book and larger gallery exhibition, “The Victor Weeps.”

Photographer Fazal Sheikh journeyed to Pakistan in 1996 in an attempt to gain insight into his ancestors and himself. While in Pakistan, he discovered his family’s homeland had been settled by thousands of refugees from neighboring Afghanistan who had fled during the nearly 20 years of war with forces from the Soviet Union. The exiles welcomed Sheikh into their villages and allowed him to photograph them and record their stories.

Amy Mooney, assistant professor of Fine Arts, will discuss “Art and Human Tragedy” at the reception. The lecture and reception are being presented in conjunction with a campus symposium reflecting on the events of Sept. 11.

The WSU Office of Student Programs and the Middle Eastern Student Association are hosting the reception.

The museum is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, 1 – 5 p.m.
