The Washington State University community is invited to view a display of mariachi suits and baile folklórico dresses from different regions of México in the Compton Union Building (CUB) gallery, located on the first floor near the building’s east entrance on the Pullman campus. The display is available through mid-April.
This display is an important representation of the rich culture and traditions from México and celebrates the farm working community’s traditional dances and music.
Mariachi suits consist of fitted trousers, a short jacket, embroidered belt, ankle-high boots, a wide bowtie, and wide-brimmed hats. Females wear long, often colorful, skirts. The display includes an example of each.
Six different styles of baile folklórico dresses are also on display. Baile folklórico is a form of traditional Mexican dancing, and the dresses worn are unique to the region in which they originated.
The display is organized by the following departments in Student Affairs: High School Equivalency Program (HEP), the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP), in partnership with the Department of Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles (AMDT).
