Washington State University’s Edward R. Murrow College of Communication is launching a fully online media innovation major in collaboration with WSU’s Global Campus.

“For the first time, students across the state and around the country will have access to the Murrow College’s internationally recognized journalism faculty through an online degree program,” said Benjamin Shors, chair of Murrow’s Department of Journalism and Media Production. “The Murrow College prides itself on intellectual rigor, practical skills training, and a strong commitment to ethics.”

Modeled after Murrow’s Journalism and Media Production program on WSU’s Pullman campus, the media innovation major is designed to address technological advancements in the modern media environment.

“I’m thrilled to welcome the media innovation major to Global Campus,” said Kris Baier, Global Campus academic advisor. “The program has been tremendously popular on the Pullman campus for many years, producing students who have gone on to make significant contributions to media industries.”

Media innovation students will be immersed in cutting-edge journalism, multimedia production, and media communication. The major focuses on understanding communication theory, developing practical skills across various media platforms, and spotlighting emerging innovations in the field.

Students will gain proficiency in professional editing and production technologies, expanding their toolbox of valuable digital media skills to conceptualizing, producing, and editing a wide range of content. The program also addresses the legal and ethical implications of journalism and media production in the modern world.

According to Shors, one of the reasons Murrow College created the fully online program was to make quality journalism education more accessible to a broader audience.

“The Murrow College recognizes the need for flexible and affordable pathways to a bachelor’s degree,” he said. “This program meets students where they are, whether they are supporting a family, balancing work commitments, or living in another state or country.”

Graduates will be well-equipped to pursue careers in digital media, journalism, and multimedia/video production in diverse markets worldwide.

“A Murrow College journalism degree provides the principles and skills that are highly sought by a broad cross-section of employers, including those in the media and digital journalism production sectors across the state and region,” said Shors. “The program’s curriculum contains an optimum mix of courses that addresses the core competencies that employers value when hiring emerging media producers, editors, and writers.”

Murrow is renowned for its experienced faculty and staff, who have built a legacy of producing communication professionals that make an impact both in the Pacific Northwest and globally.

“One of our strategic goals at WSU Global Campus is to continue adding high-demand degree programs,” said Dave Cillay, WSU Global Campus chancellor. “We are delighted to collaborate with the Murrow College of Communication to bring this innovative major to students in Washington state and beyond.”
