Sabella Consort to Perform at Beasley

PULLMAN, Wash.–The jazz group Sabella Consort will perform at Washington State University’s Beasley Coliseum Monday, Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m. as part of the coliseum’s Premiere Performances series.
The group is known for its “Renaissance Jazz” — combining traditional and contemporary jazz styles. Its jazz compositions are combined with Irish reels, old melodies and Sabella’s wit.
Rusty Sabella, the group leader, has toured to critical acclaim in the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. He has been featured on numerous television and radio specials, and has produced five albums. Sabella, who plays guitar, mandolin and mandocello, has performed with artists such as Bonnie Raitt and the Beach Boys.
Sabella is accompanied by Travis Ranney and Gary Fukushima. Ranney is an arranger, composer and performer on the saxophone, flute and wind synthesizer. Ranney has played in everything from big bands to small jazz combos to classical music, performing with artists such as Kenny G.
Fukushima, performer on the synthesizer and piano, has been playing the piano since the age of four. He has performed with artists such as Eddie Daniels and Milo Petersen.
The group’s music has been described by Los Angeles Times as “especially clean and natural, due in large measure to Sabella’s crisp guitar work and crystalline amplification.”
Tickets prices range from $5 for general admission students to $12 for reserved seats. Tickets can be purchased at the coliseum box office, University of Idaho’s Student Union Building, or through G&B Select-A-Seat outlets by calling 1-800/325-SEAT. The performance is partially funded by a grant from WSU’s Visual, Performing and Literary Arts Committee.
