Known for his passion for teaching, associate professor Jeff Abbott has been named assistant dean for professional students at Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.
“Dr. Abbott knows our students and our students know his dedication and love for teaching, which makes him a perfect candidate for this new role,” said Dr. Dori Borjesson, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. “He is passionate about WSU’s veterinary programs, and we look forward to his vision and leadership.”
Abbott received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1997 from WSU. He returned to WSU in 2021 as the director of the Diagnostic Challenges — a four-day, case-based simulated exercise for WSU veterinary students.
As assistant dean for professional students, Abbott will provide faculty-level oversight and support for the activities of individual veterinary students and student groups. He said his overarching goal will be to promote and sustain a positive, professional, and inclusive learning environment.
Abbott will also facilitate student success by addressing day-to-day student concerns and developing, implementing, and refining policies and procedures affecting academic and non-academic aspects of student life in WSU’s veterinary program.
“It’s an incredible honor to be selected for this role,” Abbott said. “I know first-hand some of the challenges our veterinary students face. I’ve sat in those same seats, so I can relate to the students and the program’s mission. Few things will be more satisfying than helping them manage their workload and overall student experience.”
