Poets Roger Reeves and Sam Roxas‑Chua to hold in‑person and virtual readings

Award-winning poet and essayist Roger Reeves will read from his work on Tuesday, October 4 as a guest of the WSU Visiting Writers Series, a system-wide offering of creative readings, class visits, workshops, and collaborative exchanges across intellectual and artistic disciplines. Reeves has been awarded an NEA Fellowship, a Ruth Lilly Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation, a Hodder Fellowship from Princeton University, and a Whiting Award among others.

Reeves is the author of Best Barbarian (W.W. Norton & Co., 2022), which Tracy K. Smith called “a revelation and a form of reparation,” and King Me (Copper Canyon Press, 2013), a Library Journal Best Poetry Book of the year, and winner of the Larry Levis Reading Prize, the PEN/Oakland Josephine Miles Literary Award, and a John C. Zacharis First Book Award. His poems have appeared in journals such as Poetry, Ploughshares, American Poetry Review, Boston Review, and Tin House, among others.

Reeves’s reading and Q&A will take place on October 4th at 6:00 PM PST in Chinook 150 on the WSU Pullman campus and via the VWS YouTube livestream. The event is free and open to the public.

Poet and multimedia artist Sam Roxas-Chua 姚 (Yao) will read/present from his work on Tuesday, October 25 as a guest of the WSU Visiting Writers Series. Roxas-Chua has read for PEN International, city government events, and is currently an artist-in-residence at the Portland Chinatown Museum.

Roxas-Chua is the author of Saying Your Name Three Times UnderwaterEcholalia in ScriptFawn Language, and the podcast Dear Someone Somewhere, an audio-journal project. Poet Tyehimba Jess describes Sam’s poems as “surreal yet rooted in palpable color and history … it transcends oceans, blends geographies, and bleeds a multitongued heritage for us to better find ourselves.”
