Teaching Academy launches award for large‑class teaching achievements

Washington State University faculty who teach classes of 50 students or more can apply now for the WSU Teaching Academy’s new Award for Excellence in Teaching a Large Class.

The award is the group’s third new award in two years, with the large-class teaching award joining the others for publications and conference attendance. All have March 15, 2022 deadlines.

“The Teaching Academy strives to recognize the accomplishments of WSU faculty, and the new award celebrates achievement in teaching in one of the most difficult contexts—large class sections,” said Joy Egbert, academy chair.

Award application

Any full-time faculty member at the level of lecturer through professor can self-nominate using an online form. Applicants should submit separate forms if teaching multiple classes.

Applications must, for example, indicate sustained instructional excellence in a large class over a minimum of three semesters. Reflections must address successful strategies to promote inclusivity, diversity, equity, and/or access, and active learning. Three semesters of student evaluations, including comments, must be uploaded. Complete requirements are in the form.

The organization serves as the institution’s premier organization dedicated to teaching excellence. It is open to a select number of faculty with academic responsibility to the university who have records of sustained excellence in teaching and are recognized for their scholarship in teaching and learning. The newest members were installed in May 2020.
