WSU to host Health Justice and Belonging Conference Feb. 2–3

The WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine will host its third annual Inclusive Excellence Scholar in Residence – Health Justice and Belonging Conference on Feb. 2-3.

The virtual two-day event will feature keynote speaker john a. powell, the director of the Othering & Belonging Institute at the University of California, Berkeley. powell is an internationally recognized expert in the areas of civil rights and structural racism, as well as other medical and community leaders dedicated to solving problems in challenging healthcare environments.

Several sessions are available each day for guests to select based on their availability and interests. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

The conference was created to facilitate an interdisciplinary approach to the challenges facing health care professionals and the communities they serve. It also provides a place for people wanting to join the conversation about health justice and belonging within organizations and communities. 

“The COVID-19 pandemic along with racial injustices have been highlighted within the last few years, which calls us as a community-based medical school to be part of the solution,” said David Garcia, assistant dean for Health Equity and Inclusion. “We can argue whether or not our state and country have been better or worse than today, yet there is a sense of urgency and we are focused on doing our part to ensure people are living better, longer.”
