Public Forum Set April 15 During Accreditation Visit

PULLMAN, Wash. — An open public forum is planned next week as part of the 10-year
accreditation review for Washington State University.
The chair of the accreditation evaluation team, Chancellor Joan Wadlow of the University of
Alaska, Fairbanks, will hold the public open forum from 2-3 p.m. Thursday, April 15, in Todd Hall
Auditorium, Room 116. The session provides the campus and community an opportunity to
discuss issues and ask questions about accreditation and the evaluation of WSU.
The Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges is responsible for the accreditation of
colleges and universities in the region. A 17-member team of academic leaders will visit WSU
campuses April 13-16 for the university’s 10-year re-accreditation evaluation.
“The accreditation visit, particularly the public forum, is a valuable opportunity to voice
concerns, raise issues, address challenges and highlight achievements at WSU,” WSU Provost
Gretchen Bataille said.
Accreditation is a necessary component of an institution’s viability, the provost said. The
institution is eligible to receive federal funding and its credits transfer to other accredited
institutions. Many of its specialized programs then become eligible for their own accreditation.
Accredited institutions must meet a series of high standards that include scholarship, internal
functioning, financial management and institutional integrity.
“While the expectation is that WSU will be re-accredited, recommendations from the
evaluation team are also anticipated and welcomed,” Bataille said. “It is vital, therefore, that the
WSU community participates in the discussion and evaluation.”
