Colloquium: Physics & Astronomy – Michael Allen

The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites all to a colloquium featuring Dr. Michael Allen, Department of Physics & Astronomy. Dr. Allen will present his talk, “Implementation of team-based project-driven learning in a senior-level astrobiology course”, Tuesday, January 10, at 4:10 p.m. in Webster 17.

Meet for refreshments before the lecture at 3:45 – 4:10 p.m. in the foyer on floor G above the lecture hall.

Abstract: What is the biological capacity of the universe?  To what extent is this capacity realized?  I will describe how a group of advanced students spent 15 weeks responding to these questions.  We will journey with them, discovering how they dove deeply into the research literature and into their own imaginations, what coaching they needed, what standards they were held to, and what achievements they made.  Ultimately, I will demonstrate that project-based learning invokes the very best of critical thinking and appraisal from my students.
