Playwright Sarah Ruhl has taken the classical Greek myth of Orpheus – the gifted musician who pleaded for his wife’s release from death’s underworld – and reimagined it through the eyes of a modern-day Eurydice. The New York Times called it an “inexpressibly moving theatrical fable about love, loss and the pleasures and pains of memory.”

“I fell in love with this wonderfully weird script the first time I read it,” said director Mary Trotter, WSU Performing Arts (http://performingarts.wsu.edu/). “Its quirky, fantastical nature makes it so original and open to interpretation. I love the artistic risks it allows the actors, director and designers to take.”

Although Ruhl uses Greek mythology as the starting point for her tale, “‘Eurydice’ really is its own story about a woman’s journey to find her place in the world – or underworld, as it may be,” said Trotter.

The WSU Performing Arts production stars Aryn Allen as the title character, Steve Wesner as her father and Karl Moore as Orpheus. WSUPA Black Box Classics is an annual program that stages timeless and beloved plays in Wadleigh Theatre, an intimate “black box” theater that brings the audience closer to the story played out before them. “Eurydice” is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
