WSU Named Among Nation’s Colleges to Study Jazz

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University is one of the best places to study jazz, the jazz magazine Down Beat reported in its latest edition.

The magazine listed WSU among 111 U.S. colleges, universities and conservatories to study jazz and one of only 20 institutions included from the western United States in the special section “Where to Study Jazz.” WSU was the only school in the state of Washington listed.

Down Beat is arguably the most important magazine in jazz, said Gregory Yasinitsky, coordinator of jazz studies at WSU.

The most recent edition of Jazz Times, too, recognized the WSU program in its “Directory of Jazz Education Worldwide.”

The WSU Jazz Big Band and the faculty jazz group, Jazz Northwest, have been invited to perform concerts at the 2002 Washington State Music Educators Association state conference. The February conference is planned for Yakima.
