Julie Silvera Entertains with Jazz Tunes at WSU July 26

PULLMAN, Wash. — Local jazz vocalist Julie Silvera will conclude the summer Music on the Mall series at Washington State University with a concert at noon Thursday, July 26.

In case of rain, the concert will be in the Compton Union Building Lair. The CUB food service will sell food at the performance, which is presented by the Office of Student Programs.

Silvera will be singing music from the swing and bebop era with tunes made famous by artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Blossom Dearie and Diana Krall. Charles Argersinger, a WSU professor in composition and jazz pianist, will accompany her.

The duo will give the audience a taste of the music of the Silvera Argersinger quartet, who regularly performs jazz of the ’30s to’70s. Silvera favors lesser known pieces but also will offer some tunes jazz lovers would know. “The performance will be intimate, relaxed and a lot of fun. It’s always great to perform outdoors,” she says.

Silvera won first place in the alto soloist division at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in 2000 and 2001, and in 1999 she was second in the same division. As an undergraduate, she originally was a piano performance major, but a friend then convinced her to start singing jazz.

Silvera, who was born in Jamaica, is currently working on a master’s degree in music at WSU. She came to Pullman from Miami in 1996 and received a bachelor’s degree in music from WSU in 2000. She plans to continue with doctoral studies in jazz performance in 2002.
