PULLMAN, Wash. — Kiran Ahluwalia will perform ghazals and other traditional Indian and Pakistani vocal music with her quartet at a free and open concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, in the Bryan Hall theater at Washington State University.
Ahluwalia specializes in the centuries-old tradition of ghazals, love songs that are both intensely romantic and passionately spiritual. Her performances of ghazals feature stunning interpretations of this classical song poetry and fluid improvisations that are like those of a master jazz musician.
She has recently released her new CD, “Kashish,” and is bringing the ensemble with whom she made the recording with her. The ensemble members are Suresh Ramotar on tabla, Dhiren Raichura on guitar and Kiran Thrakar on harmonium. Ahluwalia accompanies herself on a tanpura.
Ahluwalia, who now lives in Toronto, Canada, studied ghazals with Vithal Rao in Hyderabad, India, and received her training in Indian classical music from Padma Talwalkar in Bombay and Narendra Datar in Toronto.
The WSU Summer Recreation Committee and WSU School of Music and Theatre Arts are sponsoring the world music concert.
