Employees, students invited to career fairs

PULLMAN – Despite daunting news regarding the job market, more than 100 representatives from companies, organizations and other universities will come to WSU with positions to fill at two career fairs and related events Oct. 6-7.

In addition to students, the fairs are open to employees and the greater community. Employees are encouraged to participate themselves and/or to encourage students to attend.

Participants can explore opportunities and market themselves at the College of Engineering and Architecture Technical Career Fair, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, and the WSU Career Expo for all majors, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7. Both will be Beasley coliseum.

About 80-90 organizations will be represented at each event; some organizations will have a booth at both.

Preceding the fairs will be days of resume reviews, mock interviews and company informal sessions intended to help students and others from the community prepare and present themselves as the best possible candidates to the recruiters.

Jobs available
“Representatives from for-profit, nonprofit and government organizations tell us they have jobs and internships available and that they are very interested in meeting candidates from WSU,” said Christie Motley, employer relations manager in the WSU Center for Advising and Career Development and lead coordinator of the expo.

“Some are Fortune 500 companies,” she said. “There are local as well as international corporations. Industries range from technology to hospitality, and from risk management to agriculture and pharmaceuticals.

“There also will be service organizations,” Motley said. “And some universities will be here to promote graduate programs, as well.

“Quite literally, there is something for everyone who is looking for a career, an internship or more education, and the doors are open at no charge to everyone,” she said.

Technical fair
The technical career fair on Oct. 6 will bring about 80 companies from a variety of engineering, computer technology and architectural firms from throughout the U.S. to the Beasley, said Bridget Pilcher, CEA development coordinator and fair organizer. Any resulting interviews will take place that day from 3-7 p.m. in Beasley with arrangements made by the recruiters.

Schedule mock interviews

It’s never too early to prepare to market yourself. Job seekers are encouraged to sign up for CareerLink, available through the Center for Advising and Career Development website
to post and update resumes and cover letters, and to schedule mock interviews.
Also on Tuesday, CACD will host an open house 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in Lighty 180 where career counselors and recruiters will be available to review resumes and cover letters on a drop-in basis. For students who have pre-registered online using CareerLink on the CACD website, organization recruiters will be on hand in Lighty 160 to conduct mock interviews, giving students practice and tips to improve.

On Tuesday evening in the CUB, some companies will host sessions to give overviews about their organizations and details about open positions.

All-majors fair
On Wednesday, approximately 90 companies in both technical and non-technical fields will be at Beasley for the WSU Career Expo. Again, same-day interviews will be scheduled by the recruiters during the day and held 4-8 p.m. in the coliseum.

The career fair and expo websites have detailed information about what organizations will be represented at the events as well as tips on how to prepare to market oneself, said Janina Robbins, CACD internship and career adviser.

“Events such as these provide opportunities for all students in any major, from upperclassmen looking for internships and career-starting positions to freshmen exploring and researching future careers and internship possibilities for the first time,” she said. “It’s a great way for them to start to build networks with professionals.”

More career fairs upcoming
Another WSU Career Expo is planned for spring on Feb. 9, 2010, but there is also one more career fair at WSU this fall. On Tuesday, Nov. 3, the colleges of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences and Business are co-sponsoring an event 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in the CUB.

In addition to the WSU events, the University of Idaho is hosting its Engineering and Computer Science Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 7, and an all-majors fair on Thursday, Oct. 8. More information is available on those events here.
