World track and field champion, Olympic medalist and WSU alumnus Bernard Lagat will be recognized at the men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader Sunday, Dec. 9 at Beasley coliseum. Last summer, Lagat made history by winning both the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter events at the world track and field championships in Osaka, Japan. Lagat became the first athlete to win both events in the history of the championships. He also earned the silver medal in the 1,500-meter at the Olympics in 2004 and bronze at the 2000 Olympics.
While at WSU, Lagat won NCAA indoor and outdoor championships. In 1999, he was honored as the NCAA Indoor Male Athlete of the Year and the Pac-10 Male Athlete of the Year.
