Tennis courts may open by mid-May

If the weather permits, 12 new outdoor tennis courts across Fairway Drive to the south of the Student Recreation Center will be opening during the second or third week in May, according to Louise Sweeney, a project manager for capital planning and development.

“All that’s left to do is apply the acrylic” top coating, she said. “Right now it’s still asphalt and too rough to play on.”

The courts need about five coats of acrylic for a smooth finish. Before the acrylic can be applied, workers need about 10 days of nice weather above 50 degrees, she said.

When the courts do open, the public can use them on a first-come first-served basis, after allowing priority to the varsity tennis program, P.E. classes and intramural sports, said Scott Randall, assistant director for athletic event management and facilities. Tennis equipment will not be provided at the courts, he said.

Parking is free for WSU parking permit holders, said Chris Boyan, outreach manager for parking services. For others, there is a machine in the lot for paying by the hour.
