DRS hosts retirement seminar, pension workshops

The state Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) will offer its free retirement planning seminar and pension workshops in Pullman on Saturday, April 21, (location to be determined). These take place once every two years, so employees and their spouses/partners are encouraged to attend.

The 8 a.m.-5 p.m. seminar will include general information presentations on: financial planning, estate planning, Social Security benefits, state retiree health insurance, the voluntary employee beneficiary association (VEBA), state deferred compensation program (DCP), and the state pension plans for PERS (Public Employees’ Retirement System), PSERS (Public Safety Employees’ Retirement System), SERS (School Employees’ Retirement System), and TRS (Teachers’ Retirement System).

These are large group presentations and individual appointments will not be possible.

Employees interested only in their state pension-plan information might instead consider attending a 90-minute workshop. These will cover such topics as: service credit, retirement eligibility, benefit calculations, payment options and other plan-specific information. Workshop times will be:

• Plan 2 (for PERS, PSERS, SERS and TRS): 11:15 a.m.-12:45 p.m.
• Plan 3 (for PERS, SERS and TRS): 11:15 a.m.-12:45 p.m.
• PERS Plan 1: 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m.
• TRS Plan 1: 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m.

Preregistration is required for the seminar or workshops, and space is limited. Register by phone at 888-711-6676 or at https://fortress.wa.gov/drs/retirementplanning/main.asp. The DRS will mail a confirmation letter two weeks before the event with the location, address, map and directions.
