Lockheed Martin Computer Donation to Benefit WSU Tri-Cities’ First Freshman Class

TRI-CITIES, Wash. — Students in WSU Tri-Cities’ inaugural freshmen class will benefit from new laptop computers, thanks to the generosity of Lockheed Martin Information Technology.  Lockheed Martin will donate 50 new laptop computers, which will be provided to incoming freshmen students, on loan, for their use during their first year of classes.  Students will become eligible to have the laptops turned over to them in their sophomore year.

Lockheed Martin officials will formally present the computers to WSU Tri-Cities Chancellor Vicky Carwein and student leaders at a special ceremony and press conference to be held Friday (Jan. 19) at 11 a.m. in the West Building Atrium on the WSU Tri-Cities campus.

“We are pleased to continue our relationship with WSU-TC through this latest contribution,” said Frank Armijo, Lockheed Martin director and general manager.  “We believe in WSU-Tri-Cities students and we continually find talented interns to integrate into our business, many of whom become full-time employees.  The laptops demonstrate our overall commitment to education and the Tri-Cities.”

“All of us at WSU Tri-Cities are extremely appreciative of this wonderful gift,” said Chancellor Vicky Carwein.  “It will make a significant contribution to the success of students in our historic first freshmen class, and provide an important learning tool to those students who may have limited financial resources.  This donation underscores Lockheed Martin’s tremendous ongoing support of higher education in the Tri-Cities area.”

The university is currently accepting applications from high school seniors for admission to this fall’s first freshmen class.  WSU Tri-Cities will be offering first-year courses in the fall of 2007 to freshmen students in the following degree programs:

  • Business Administration (Majors in accounting, accounting information systems, business administration and management & operations)
  • Digital Technology and Culture
  • Education (elementary education)
  • English
  • History
  • Humanities
  • Social Sciences  (concentrations in anthropology, criminal justice, human resources/personnel, psychology or sociology)

High school seniors interested in other bachelor’s degrees offered at WSU Tri-Cities can participate in a co-enrollment program with Columbia Basin College.

In addition to having use of the new donated laptop computers, full-time freshmen in these degree programs will receive a special $3,000, to be matched by an additional $3,000 scholarship in their senior year.

January 31 is the freshmen application deadline for priority consideration for acceptance and financial aid.
