VANCOUVER – Washington State University Vancouver announces the Fall 2006 Honors Lecture Series, “Beyond Bollywood: Social Films, Transnational Directors, Indian Scenarios,” talks on films from and about India.
All discussions will be 7 to 9 p.m. in the WSU Vancouver Multimedia Classroom building, Room 6. These events are free and open to the public.

Pavithra Narayanan, assistant professor, WSU Vancouver, presents “A Reflection in the Water: Confronting Gender and Political Issues of India Through Cinema,” a discussion of Deepa Mehta’s film “Water.”

Jigna Desai, assistant professor, University of Minnesota, presents “From Blackpool to Bollywood: British Asian Feminism in Bhaji on the Beach,” a discussion of Gurinder Chadha’s film “Bhaji on the Beach.”

Kumi Silva, assistant professor, Northeastern University, Boston, presents, “Four Days, Five Stories: Monsoon Wedding and the Mythos of a ‘New’India,” a discussion of Mira Nair’s film “Monsoon Wedding.”

Jon Hegglund, assistant professor, Washington State University, Pullman, presents, “The Stain of Race, the Bleach of Englishness, the Fabric Softener of Sexuality,” a discussion of Hanif Kureishi’s film “My Beautiful Laundrette.”

Sangita Gopal, assistant professor, University of Oregon, presents, “Communal Love: Erotics and Politics in Recent Indian Cinema,” a discussion of Aparna Sen’s film “Mr. & Mrs. Iyer.”
