Interim director of Libraries named by Office of Provost

Cindy Stewart Kaag has been named the interim director of Washington State University’s Libraries, the Provost’s Office announced today. Ginny Steel, former director, accepted a position at the University of California Santa Cruz earlier this summer.

Kaag is a senior faculty member and library administrator with experience in several departments, and holds an assistant director position for Public Services and Outreach.

“This background and depth of experience will position her to effectively lead the library during this transition period,” said Robert Bates, provost and executive vice president.

Kaag received her master’s degree in 1975 in Library Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her undergraduate and post-graduate work focused on history and Scandinavian studies. She joined the WSU faculty in 1986 and was head of collections in Owen Science and Engineering Library for 10 years before becoming Head of George Brain Education Library and then Owen Science and Engineering and Fisher Agricultural Science Libraries. Prior to this assignment,  Kaag served as interim assistant director for Public Services and Outreach.

In addition to publishing on collection development,  Kaag has developed an extensive subject-indexed and annotated internet-searchable database of almost 12,000 citations to scientific research on Yellowstone National Park, accessible at http://www.wsu.edu/~kaag/index.html.
