PULLMAN, Wash. — The YWCA of Washington State University will sponsor the 2002 Week Without Violence on the WSU campus Monday-Friday, Oct. 21-25. The theme will be “Brick by Brick, Building a Wall Against Violence.”
The YWCA week-long campaign is a national movement to eradicate family violence, violence linked to racism and bigotry and violence against women. With each ensuing year the YWCA’s message of individual responsibility and collaborative solutions hits home throughout the country and in our own community, said Rahwa Habte, YWCA of WSU program manager.
A kick-off event is planned for noon Monday, Oct. 21, on Glenn Terrell Mall. A closing program is set for Friday, Oct. 25, also at noon on the mall.
More than 15 programs will be offered throughout the week. The highlights include the annual Clothesline Project on the Glenn Terrell Mall Oct. 21-25; the “Take Back the Night” rally and march on Oct. 21 starting at 7 p.m. on Terrell Mall; “Brick by Brick, Building a Wall Against Violence” display at many campus locations throughout the week; an open mic/poetry slam for peace set for Oct. 23 from 7-9 p.m. in the Compton Union Building Butch’s Den; Building Bridges cultural talent show at 7 p.m., Oct. 24, in the CUB Auditorium; “Body of Violence” display up all week throughout the mall; a film series about stereotypes leading to violence on Oct. 22 and 24 at 3 p.m. in Cleveland Hall’s Talmadge Anderson Heritage House; a “rap” session Oct. 22 in CUB Butch’s Den at 5 p.m.; and a candlelight vigil at 6 p.m. on the Terrell Mall on Oct. 25.
