VANCOUVER, Wash. — Washington State University Vancouver awarded 71 scholarships for the 2002-2003 academic year at its second annual scholarship luncheon Sept. 20.

The luncheon provides an opportunity for scholarship donors to meet student recipients and hear a student speak on how the scholarships provided him assistance.

The scholarships are supported by private gifts to WSU Vancouver from individuals, businesses, organizations and foundations. Individual awards range from $200-$5,000.

When the Vancouver campus was established in 1989, scholarship support was $500. Today, support is more than $1.6 million in annual and endowed scholarship funds.

“The scholarship program at WSU Vancouver has grown tremendously,” said Hal Dengerink, campus executive officer and dean. “Thanks to the continued support of community donors, we are able to help a growing number of students finance their education.”

This year the Harold F. and Beatrice A. Boutwell Endowed Scholarship helped 20 WSU Vancouver students. It is supported by a $415,000 bequest from the estate of Harold Boutwell of Ridgefield. Boutwell established the endowed scholarship in 1999 with a $100,000 gift. Having never attended college, Boutwell wanted to provide financial assistance to community members pursuing higher education.

Five students received a John Robert Brown Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to high-achieving students from Clark College and Lower Columbia College in Washington and Clackamas, Portland and Mt. Hood community colleges in Oregon.
