PULLMAN, Wash. — The Washington State University Board of Regents today approved a 3.7 percent salary increase for President V. Lane Rawlins. The meeting was held at The Coeur d’Alene conference center in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
The increase will be added to his current base salary of $245,000. Rawlins also received a retention package that includes an additional $40,000 annuity per year of service for the first five years, and $80,000 for a sixth year.
Board President Robert Fukai said the action recognizes the demands of the presidency and Rawlins’ accomplishments during his first year as WSU president.
“Under President Rawlins’ leadership throughout the past year, significant progress has been made in streamlining and implementing a new budget reallocation plan and reprioritizing activities,” Fukai said. “During this time, too, an integrated marketing plan has begun.
“The board hired President Rawlins to carry out these responsibilities and wants to ensure that he can finish what he so ably has begun,” Fukai said. “The board is pleased President Rawlins has gotten off to such a great start and wishes to retain his services.”
In other action, the board approved the purchase of an $805,000 mass spectrometer that will be housed in the GeoAnalytical Lab at Webster Physical Sciences Building. The acquisition has received major funding from the J. J. Murdock Charitable Trust and the National Science Foundation.
The board also approved establishment of a $1 million Student Investment Fund that will be managed with recommendations from two upper division finance classes. Regents, too, approved a name change of the Department of Pure and Applied Mathematics to the Department of Mathematics; changed the Program in Health Policy Administration to a department; and extended the bachelor of arts degree in business administration, real estate, to WSU Spokane.
Following the business meeting, the board began planning discussions that will continue through Saturday (June 30) morning.
