VANCOUVER, Wash. — Three new art exhibits at Washington State University Vancouver feature digital works by students, watercolor paintings by a Washougal artist and welded sculptures by a group of Clark College women alumni.
Colorful and creative images created by students in fine arts and electronic media and culture classes are now on display in the Student Services Building Gallery. Using original and existing images, students created digital collage and Web design with imaging software.
Harrison Higgs, assistant professor of humanities and director of the Multimedia Application Research Studio, and adjunct professor Elaine Powell-Ascroft teach students how to use digital imaging tools to create artistic images for Web and print. His courses are part of the electronic media and culture program that prepares students for Internet-related careers.
Students in the program learn about the historical, cultural and practical impacts of digital media, as well as skills for Web authoring and design, digital imaging and Web research. Completion of the electronic media and culture program culminates in a bachelor’s degree in humanities or social sciences.
Watercolor paintings by Elizabeth Hansen are on display in the Engineering Life Sciences Building. Her works are inspired by her travels in Europe and lend themselves to an Impressionistic style of painting. A Vancouver resident, Hansen is a member of the Southwest Washington Watercolor Society and graduate of Fort Vancouver High School.
Also on display in the WSU Vancouver Library are welded metal sculptures by Women Who Weld, a local group of women passionate about welded art.
Student Services and Engineering Life Sciences gallery exhibits are open to the public during campus building hours, 7:30 a.m.-10 p.m., Monday-Friday, and will remain on display through June.
The Women Who Weld exhibit is open during library hours: 8 a.m.-9:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday; 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday; and noon-5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.
