WSU forester Don Hanley works on the UW campus in Seattle
Washington State University Cooperative Extension Forester Don Hanley does traditional extension forestry work. What is not traditional is his location. For his entire 17-year career at WSU, Hanley’s office has been in Seattle on the campus of the University of Washington in the College of Forest Resources. He takes some kidding at Apple Cup time. “Of course, depending on who wins,” Hanley says. “Competition on the football field is good. Competition amongst universities in the state paid by the state’s taxpayers is kind of foolish. Collaboration is the way to go.”

Former Husky football player Dr. Don Kelts is a Cougar, too
Former University of Washington Husky football player Don Kelts (UW Class of 1965) has a WSU connection. He earned his doctor of veterinary medicine degree in 1972 from the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine. The former Washington State Veterinary Medical Association president practices small animal medicine at Sunset Pet Hospital in Renton and Aerowood Animal Hospital in Bellevue. A UW football season ticket holder, he attends some WSU home football games when there is not a conflict with Husky games.

UW and WSU pharmacy alums meet in Pullman before Apple Cup
For the third consecutive year, UW and WSU pharmacy alums will hold a joint reception. Held in WSU’s Compton Union Building, Room 212, it will be Saturday, Nov. 18, starting two hours before the Apple Cup football game kickoff. What do Husky and Coug pharmacists talk about before the big game? WSU’s Pharmacy dean, Bill Fassett, has made a friendly wager on the outcome of this year’s game with Sid Nelson, pharmacy dean at UW. The wager involves a bottle of Washington-produced wine.

Cougar broadcaster and player, former UW football coach
Cougar Sports Network radio color commentator with football play-by-play “voice” Bob Robertson is Scott Pelluer, WSU 1982 grad. A former Cougar football player, he is also a former University of Washington assistant football coach. His brother, Steve Pelluer, was a Husky quarterback in the early 1980s.
Two Cougars’ brotherly connections to the Huskies
WSU football players Ing Aleaga (coming off a broken foot, now playing defensive tackle) and Russell Mizin (starting tight end) had brothers who played football for the Washington Huskies: Ink Aleaga, a standout linebacker 1994-96, and tight end Anthony Mizin, 1996-99.
