PULLMAN, Wash. — A 14-year-old suspect is being held in the Whitman County jail without bail for allegedly setting several fires in a Washington State University building on Thursday.

Superior Court Judge Wallis Friel ordered the juvenile booked into the county jail until an Aug. 10 hearing.

The arson charges stem from an Aug. 3 incident reported at Troy Hall.

Interim police chief Steve Hansen said firefighters were called about 2 p.m. to the building when employees smelled smoke in the facility. There was no fire when firefighters arrived, but they found evidence that someone had attempted to start several small fires in an eastside storage area on the building’s first floor. Pullman arson investigator Rich Dragoo joined the case.

Today (Aug. 4), WSU police questioned and later arrested the juvenile who was in the area.

No major damage was reported to the university building.
