PULLMAN, Wash. — The Washington State University College of Veterinary
Medicine has published a 134-page book detailing the first 100 years of the
college’s existence.
“We are the fifth oldest veterinary college in the United States with a rich
history captured in this new book,” said Interim Dean Terry McElwain. “We’re
very proud of the fact that the Fall of 1999 and this book mark not only our
official centennial year, but also our entry into the next century of teaching,
research and service to society. It’s truly amazing to realize that this
multi-million dollar, internationally recognized college began with a single state
appropriation of $60 to build a lean-to shed.”
Journalist Peter Harriman and Professor Emeritus Ghery D. Pettit, a retired
veterinary surgeon, took more than a year to research and write the book that
features more than 90 historic photos and illustrations, many never before
published. Harriman, a reporter for more than 20 years with the former Pullman
Herald in Pullman, and the Moscow-Pullman Daily News in Moscow, Idaho, is
currently a regional reporter for the Argus Leader newspaper in Sioux Falls,
S.D. Dr. Pettit, a University of California Davis veterinary alumnus, was a WSU
veterinary faculty member from 1961-91 and has written before about aspects
of veterinary history.
“Our former dean, Dr. Borje Gustafsson, recognized the importance of a
centennial history and initiated this project before his retirement,” said
McElwain. “Peter Harriman provided us with a fresh look at the college from an
outsider’s point of view, while Dr. Pettit had the professional contacts and
experience to be able to bring the writing to life. Charlie Powell, our public
information officer, was the managing editor for the project.”
The book was designed and printed in its 8-by-8 inch size by the Office of
University Publications and Printing at WSU. Two distinctive crimson
bindings are available. The paperbound edition sells for $30, and a limited
edition leather-bound book sells for $100. Prices include shipping and any
applicable taxes.
