Ackerman Receives Award

PULLMAN, Wash. — Robert E. Ackerman, a Washington State University professor of
anthropology and archeology, received an Alaska Anthropological Association Career
Achievement Award at the group’s annual meeting in recently. The award recognizes Ackerman’s
contributions to Alaskan archeology and support of the AAA.
Tracing the prehistoric entry of man from Asia into the Western Hemisphere and his
subsequent use of terrestrial and marine resources has been the focus of Ackerman’s research.
His work has taken him to Siberia, the Russian Far East, Korea and China. Six of his graduate
students will be doing archeological work in Northwestern Alaska this summer in a continuation
of Ackerman’s long-term program of advising students in the field.
Ackerman earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Michigan and a
doctoral degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the faculty at WSU in 1961. He
has been director of the WSU Museum of Anthropology since 1987, and is a fellow of both the
American Anthropological Association and the American Association for the Advancement of
Science.
