PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University President Samuel H. Smith will have
prostate cancer surgery March 31 at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle.
The diagnosis of his condition was made at an early stage and the prognosis is excellent,
Smith said. Following about a week in the hospital, the president expects to spend four or five
weeks recuperating. He expects to be back to work in time for commencement May 8.
During the recovery period, Provost Gretchen Bataille and the executive committee will lead
the operations of the university, Smith said.
