WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Washington State University President Samuel Smith is the
keynote speaker at the 10th annual Blue Mountain Activities Association National Honor
Society Initiation Banquet. The March 10 event begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Walla Walla Elks
Lodge.
Students from southeastern Washington high schools, including Asotin, Dayton, DeSales
of Walla Walla, Kahlotus, Pomeroy, Prescott, Touchet, Waitsburg, and possibly from Jubilee
Academy of Prescott and Liberty Christian High of Richland, will be initiated, said Richard
Goodwin, Asotin High principal.
More than 300 honored students, parents and relatives, honor society members, teachers
and administrators are expected to take part in the event, he said.
Started in 1921, the National Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization established
to recognize outstanding high school students. The society honors students for demonstrated
excellence in scholarship, leadership, service and character.
Smith, WSU president since 1985, has conferred more than one-third of all WSU academic
degrees since the university’s first commencement in 1897.
Also attending the banquet will be Jane Lawrence, director of WSU’s University Honors
College. The college, founded in 1960, is one of the oldest and best known programs in the
nation. The Honors College offers a highly developed, enriched curriculum designed to help
academically talented students. Students studying in the college make up about 10 percent of
WSU’s undergraduate population.
