PULLMAN, Wash. — Billie Severtsen, a member of the College of Nursing faculty, has received the first Washington
State University Faculty Award for Distinction in Ethics Teaching.
The award, which includes a $250 honorarium, recognizes faculty for demonstrated excellence in the teaching of ethics,
designing curricula, developing teaching materials, and other programs that incorporate the discussion of ethical concerns and
engaging students in ethical analysis.
Severtsen is responsible for developing much of the curriculum used by the Intercollegiate Center for Nursing
Education/WSU College of Nursing to teach students about ethical concerns in nursing. Her consultations with local health
agencies and special guest lectures have helped increase the knowledge of bioethical situations and dilemmas in the Spokane
area, say her nominators.
Severtsen has taught at the Spokane nursing education center for 23 years. She holds degrees from Gonzaga and Columbia
universities.
